An auditor’s job is to help individuals and companies with their financial accounts. It is an exciting and responsible job that pays well. But it requires that you have an overview, are good at numbers, and have a long education.

How do I become an accountant?

Being an accountant is not a protected title, but something anyone can call themselves if you work full-time administratively with auditing of accounts. On the other hand, you can only call yourself a state-authorized public accountant, and thus have access to a number of tasks if you have the right education.

The way to become an accountant is a long and demanding education.

Secondary school: You must first have a high school education either at STX (regular Bachelor’s degree), HF, HHX or HTX
Pupil: After that you must take the accountant student training, which takes 2 years. During this period, most people will also start reading the education required:
HD 1st part: Next you must take HD 1st part on either Aarhus BBS or Copenhagen CBS,
or academy education: Instead of HD you can go to a business academy such as. financial controller or financial economics. It takes 2 years.
At this point, you can call yourself the Assistant Accountant.
After relevant work experience, often in connection with your student position or accountant assistant work, then read on
Auditor by reading HD 2nd part, which takes 2 years. Then you can call yourself “trained accountant, HD-R”. This is equivalent to undergraduate level.
Candidate: Then read Cand. Merc. Aud. – the title of candidate as auditor. You can read about this at the universities or business schools in Aalborg, Aarhus, Kolding, Odense or Copenhagen. It also takes a couple of years.
How to become a State Authorized Public Accountant?
To become a State Authorized Public Accountant, you must then

Have 3 years work experience in a state-authorized audit firm as a graduate candidate Cand. Merc. Aud. accountant. At least 1 of these years must be after completing Cand. Merc. Aud.
Take 3 written accountancy exams and 1 oral accountant exam at the Copenhagen Stock Exchange
Be debt free, be insured and have a clean criminal record
In total, you need to count on at least about 10 years of education after your high school education to become a state-authorized public accountant.

Where can you get a job as an accountant?

If you are a trained accountant or assistant, you can get a job in corporate finance departments, at an accounting firm or be assistants for state-authorized public accountants.

The state-authorized public accountants work in audit firms as well as in, for example. insurance companies, banks, insurance companies, consulting firms and credit unions – or in the public administration.
